I have 3000 songs in CBR 128 with complete ID tags.
Completing and filling in the tags was a lot of work.
Now I'd like to create another version of my music library
using VBR (and of course I have all the original .ape's).
Naturally I don't want to have to create my ID tags again;
I guess I should have attached my tags to my original .ape
files and not to my .mp3 files but it's too late now.

So I'd like to create a new library keeping my existing tags.
How do I do this ?

I would start experimenting with the list creation and tag-from-list tools. If your new VBR mp3 files can at least be in the same order (by filename) as the existing mp3s, that might go a long way toward easing the process. In brief: write pertinent tag data from existing mp3s to lists, then tag new mp3s from those lists.

Magnus will reply shortly, invalidating what I have just said ;)

Nah, it's actually a good suggestion. :)
Use the same filenames for the new VBR collection as for the old CBR collection, dump the tags from the CBR collection to a list (with the list creation tool) and then import them to the new ones with the import from list tool, just like Disposable Hero says. It will be done in notime.

Thank you Magnus and Disposable.
This looks exactly like what I need. It seems a very useful  idea which you should push more. In some ways the ID Tags are more precious than the .mp3 files themselves because their creation can be so time consuming. Correct me if I'm wrong but programs like CDDB and freeDB which make it easier to tag music are ALL cd-based and NOT individual-song-based.
I'd love to be wrong about that one !!

There are some methods to make those usable on (at least collections of) mp3 files (like albums), but these are quite unreliable, and that's why I don't support them.
