I have a set of files (not my rips nor tags) in which mp3/Tag Studio shows the Title, etc. tags as blank.  However another program (I downloaded several to see if anything could read these) called "Abander MP3 Image Extractor" shows content for the tags, labeling them as V2.4.  Shall I e-mail an example, or is this a known phenomenon?

Yes, please send me a sample. Mp3/Tag Studio should fully support reading ID3v2.4 tags, so it shouldn't be that. A guess at this point would be that these affected fields are empty in the ID3v2 tags of the files, but set instead only in the ID3v1 tags, and since the default setting (can be changed) in Mp3/TS is to prioritize the ID3v2 tags, this effect would then be the result in that case.

Does the browse tool say that the tags are synced? Or can you otherwise check what the ID3v1 tag contains by pressing the little buttons that will appear in the top right corner of the browse tool when tags are not synced?

Anyway, send me a sample and I'll take a look myself, thanks.

I'll send it in a moment.  The message is that there are ONLY V2 tags, but none are displayed.

Sorry about not logging in, but I'm away from hone and don't have my id/password here.

Thanks for the sample file, I have now analyzed it.

The problem comes from a corruption in the ID3v2 tag of your file. Whatever tagger that wrote that tag failed to used "Synchsafe integers" in the frame headers, and did instead use normal integers. Hence, the size of any frame being bigger than 127 bytes will be misrepresented (in your case it was a picture tag frame), and all the frames placed after it in the ID3v2 tag will be lost when the tag is read by a program that correctly follows the ID3v2 specification.

If you know which program wrote these corrupted tags, please give this information to them so they can correct their mistake.

Thank you for the speedy analysis.  Unfortunatly I have no idea by whom or how it was encoded.  I found it on the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.folk newsgroup.  The Abander program seems to resolve the tags correctly, displaying the image and the title, etc. values as V2.4 tags.  It also displays a hex-looking value for the comment.  I can't find any option to dump the tags from Abender into a file, so I guess I'll just have to hand-copy them.

This might indicate that this "Abander" program has this bug too, and maybe even is the program that wrote the tags in the first place...
