I can't speak for Magnus, but it probably has to do with keeping less cautious users from screwing themselves. Would be nice though. There is an undo option, and I generally think that less cautious users should go to  |
Yep, I think that is the reason I did it. One potential slip of the mouse should not wield that kind of destructive power.  But maybe I'll add it in a later version after all. Until then I guess you'll have to start the program from the shell extension menu and use the mass clean tool from there.

If I understand your goal, might it be better stated as "remove tags that are not being set"? The difference being: since ID3v2 tags involve some file padding, it might be slightly faster to write new tag contents and then clear unwanted tags, than to clear all, write the file, insert new tags (possibly with a padding change) and rewrite the file. Again, Magnus will know better than I do - I am just blathering  |
You can remove any tags you want by using a sweep with the mass clean tool (optionally combined with the filter) before the auto tag sweep. I think that mixing up the functionality between the different tools too much will ultimately result in a more complex and less usable program. Also, these two sweeps don't take noticeably longer time than putting them in a single combined sweep would do anyway.

Magnus will probably want to see an example of one or more files that do not get their tags stripped properly. I have not run into this myself, though I generally don't bother paying attention to v1 tags. |
Disposable Hero sure knows what I want.  Send me a sample file and I will analyze it. My guess though is that those files contain some non-ID3-format tag, e.g. a LYRICS3 tags, whose data some programs (erroneously) display as ID3v1 tag info.

That way, I can select a group of files, and choose "Retag assumed format" and it will automatically remove the current tags first and then apply the new tags.
Sometimes "Remove tags" doesn't seem to remove the ID3-v1 and ID3-v1.1 tags. Please check the code and make sure that these tags are being entierly removed.
