To make a long story short...

Cannot access from shell.  continue to get error window that says "Inconsistency in registry errors detected".

(ok, here's the long story...
running win2k. my admin profile got corrupted.  I had to create another profile.  Hours later, I'm back to playing with my mp3s.  But, nothing shows up in the shell extension and when I go to add file name format, I get the popup error window.

You will most likely have to reinstall Mp3/Tag Studio, to fix the data that was lost due to your profile corruption. After that it should work fine though.

reinstalling version 3 did the trick.
Thank you.

And you while I have your ear...
Great product, I don't know how I would get all my mp3ing done without it. Really.  I realized how much I needed/missed it last night when I didn't have full access to it.  There are other tagging programs that are leftover from years past that I used last night, but it was like I was missing a close friend not having my MP3 Tag Studio.

I'm glad to hear that. :)

I got that same error message on my new WinXP machine.

I did a standard install of MTS using the administrator account.  It worked just fine when I was logged into the admin account, but not from any of the "limited" accounts on the computer.  I assumed that was because MTS needs write access to the install directory (c:\program files\...), so I uninstalled MTS and installed into a different directory that all users had write access to.  The prog now works for all of the accounts on the computer, but not without a warning about "Inconsistency in registry entries detected".

Is there any way to get rid of that error message?

Yes, it must be installed in each account that it should be used from.

Or alternatively, copy the following registry key from the admin account to each account it should be used in:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Magnus Brading Software\Mp3-Tag Studio

Hmmm....  I'm not sure what you mean when you say that it must be installed in each account that it should be used from.  I'm kinda new to the XP world (having migrated from Win98), but I thought you couldn't install software using  a "limited" account in XP, only using an administrator account.  Obviously, I copied the desktop shortcut (and start menu folder) over to the limited account, but I don't know how to install it to that account.

Editing the registry scares me, but I'll give it a try if necessary.  Your program is that good.

By the way, thanks for the quick response to my question.

When installing a program from the administrator account (i.e., logging into the administrator account and then running the installer program of the application in question), the start menu folder can in some cases be copied to all other user accounts. There is some things that are never copied though, like desktop icons and certain registry data.

Applications can be designed so that this data is copied to all accounts too, but this would result in that the settings for the program in question are shared between all user accounts, which is not always very desirable. Hence, Mp3/TS stores these settings locally for each user account, and when you install the program from one account (admin in your case) and try to access it from another account these settings cannot be found, since they are local to the account on which the program was installed (admin in your case), and hence the error message.

Therefore you will need to login to each account from which you want to be able to use Mp3/Tag Studio, and run the installer from there (or alternatively, copy the contents of that registry key I told you about above).

I hope things are clearer now, just ask if there's something else you want to know.

Thanks for the info.  I'll give it a try when I get home.

BTW, this is a great way to get tech support.  Keep up the good work.
