-Brading Software Message Board +--Forum: Mp3/Tag Studio Support and Bug Reports +---Topic: Error: Unable to extract mp3 information started by calberga Posted by: calberga on Mar. 07 2006,03:10 I have some files which, in the Browse/Edit tab, show the message: Unable to extract mp3 information from this file The tags show, and there don't seem to be any "wild" tags, at least none that show up in the "Advanced ID2v3 information" sub-window. The files open in at least one player (I haven't tried others), and in CoolEdit. They are not my rip, so I don't know what was used to encode them, but they are constant bit-rate (which displays in the player). The player which I use is "Quintessential". Any ideas? Posted by: Magnus Brading on Mar. 08 2006,20:36 Two guesses: 1. The files are not really mp3 files, only named so, but in reality some other format that your player supports. 2. There is some junk data before the first valid mp3 frame header in the file, try the appropriate repair option in Mp3/Tag Studio to fix this. Any luck? Posted by: calberga on Mar. 08 2006,21:58 Several other programs show the file as an mpeg 1 III file, and report the particulars. Shall I send you a copy? Posted by: calberga on Mar. 08 2006,22:03 I noticed that there was a rather small file, and am sending it along. Posted by: Magnus Brading on Mar. 08 2006,22:54 Ok, I've analyzed it now. The problem with your mp3 file it is that some broken tagger program has stacked two ID3v2 tags on top of each other at the beginning of it (which is not allowed). Simply use Mp3/Tag Studio to remove the first ID3v2 tag (e.g. with the "Remove ID3v2 tag" feature in the right-click menu of the browse tool) and it will work fine again. Posted by: calberga on Mar. 09 2006,00:21 Wonderful! Worked like a charm. Thank you VERY much. Is there any way that I could have figured this out for myself, so as not to bother you? Posted by: Magnus Brading on Mar. 09 2006,10:55 Well, you could open some mp3s in a hex editor and learn to recognize how an ID3v2 tag looks in hex (it's the first part of the file, up to the point where the bunch of zero bytes ends). Then it's pretty easy to see that there are two ID3v2 tags stacked after each other in that file. ![]() ![]() Posted by: Llamatron on Mar. 10 2006,04:55 Speaking of tags, on rare occasions I've discovered after the fact that tags have been added to JPEG files mixed in with a collection. Heh! I'm not sure if it's Tag Studio or if possibly I got them from a friend that way, but I just wanted to pass along a heads up about it. ![]() On a related note, all files are shown in the "custom selection" treeview, but only MP3s are shown in the browse/edit listview. Please consider adding a display filter for the treeview, because there's nothing useful one can do with non-MP3 files in Tag Studio anyway. It just adds to the list of error messages that appear if something else is selected by mistake from the tree when editing a bunch of files. ![]() Posted by: Magnus Brading on Mar. 10 2006,12:21 If some mp3 files are named incorrectly this can be useful (e.g. renamed to *.pdf or similar, which was common in the ancient times when Mp3/Tag Studio was initially born and mp3 files were mainly downloaded from sites that hosted them at free webspace providers that didn't like *.mp3 files ![]() Posted by: Llamatron on Mar. 10 2006,17:09 That makes sense. Thanks! end |
