+---Topic: How do I list all files with empty or no Genre tag started by sonomatom

I'd like to locate all the files with no genre tag, and ones that the ID3v2 tags exist, but have an empty genre tag.

I have tried the "Search mp3" with a "Filtering" and using only the "Tag Contents" tab, and only "Genre" ticked, and then Equal TO with no characters in the field which hasn't worked for me.

I imagine that I'm close but probably need to know Boolean using the advanced (ticked). I want to find all empty genre fields.

I don't really care about the limited ID3v1 tags.
BTW. MP3 Tag/Studio is an Excellent program with no equal!

Well, by my understanding, you did the right thing. I've just repeated your process (on a folder where some files have genre and some don't), and the search returned just those with no genre info, just as you'd expect.
Guess you'll have to wait for Magnus to appear and shed some light. And yeah, you're right about the program. There is nothing else out there like it. :)
While we're waiting for his highness, what OS are you running, and which version of MP3TS?

noddy - Thanks for checking.

After trying again on a single folder with control set of files, one of which I set the genre tag to be empty (tag exists, but no characters in it).

It worked for me too.

On my earlier test, I just didn't see the results and was misinterpreting the first "errors and warnings" window that reported which files did not pass the filter.

It does work, even on my entire collection!
(the "errors and warnings" window is really helpful because it reported some bogus files in amongst my mp3 collection...really nice feature)

Then I did another search for files without any tags to find the one with absent genre tags (really ANY ID3v2 tags are absent) and it reported a few tagless mp3s and all of my iTunes downloaded M4a and M4p songs.

Ahh, the power.
