I get I/O Error 123 whenever I try anything; convert, sort, duplicates.

This issue has been discussed at several occasions here at the support board before, e.g. in this thread:

The problem is that no archiving programs (e.g. Winzip) support UNICODE either, and hence, no samples of these favorite files can be sent to me for analysis about where this error occurrs, so that I can debug the code to handle it gracefully.

What I would really need is an example of a URL that has such special text in its title, so that I can go to it and create an IE favorite of it myself, directly in my browser, and then use it to reproduce the problem here in my debugging environment.

So, please try to find the offending bookmark(s) in your collection, and then report their URL(s) to me, and I will fix this error message in BMC once and for all. Thanks!

hi

i have the same problem while trying to Synchronizing bookmark collections

please tell me what to do my version is 3.1 and my 2 browsers
r IE 6 and FIREFOX 093 u should know 1 more thing that i am from ISRAEL and use hebrew fonts and that i have at least
1 russian bookmark too so it is a mix of english hebrew and russian

Just like the advice above, try to isolate the offending bookmarks (the ones with Unicode characters in them) and rename them, then it will work. I have received some example bookmarks now, but have some trouble reproducing the problem, but I'm still looking into it.

HOW CAN I isolate the offending bookmarks i dont know how
and what do u mean when u say- "the ones with Unicode characters in them " - i dont know what Unicode characters
meaning

as u can see all my folders have a hebrew fonts and some of the url's r in hebrew and some r in english r u advice me to rename all the hebrew folders and url's to english? well i am afraid its too much work for me we r talking about more than 100 url'smy bookmarks

One easy way to find any such favorites is to try to copy your favorites directory with a file manager program that does not support Unicode names, e.g. Norton Commander. Then all these files will create error messages (which will contain the name of the favorite/file).

i have a file manager program that call power desk of VCOM is it ok?
if not give me others options of programs and except of copy my favorites what shall i do with the copy file ? paste it or what? please give me the exactly details.

I don't know any other programs than Norton Commander from the top of my head, but I'm sure there are many. If the program fails with the copying of some of the bookmarks, it is working. :)

And yes, copy them from one location on your harddisk (i.e. the favorites directory) to another (any random place). And yes, using "Explorer terms", copy them and then paste them somewhere else.

As I said, I don't know of any off the top of my head, but if you download any random file manager from a shareware site, chances are that it will not handle Unicode names (I assume this is what you meant by "16 bit program", although it doesn't really have anything to do with that?).

yes, anyway i downloaded 3 shareware programs and i douldnt see in any of them unicode change option and i tried with all that 3 programs to copy my bookmarks file and it worked ok so i dont know what else i can do ( i guess that no one of these programs
work in an unicode option ) that is the reason y asking u for direct link. i am not an expert so i dont even know if there is any program that can work in unicode on xp.

It is not the bookmark file, but the IE favorites folder that you should try to copy. And don't look for any settings in those programs, just try to copy that folder right away.

i wrote bookmarks but i meant IE favorites and i copied them with all the 3 programs and it was ok so i guess all that programs r not
fitting.

I think another way is to put the entire favorites folder into a zip file, with Winzip. Normally, unicode files fail to get into the zip file, so that would be a way to find them too. But maybe there is some special Unicode supporting version of Winzip too, but that trick usually works for me anyway.

I couldn't find a file manger to fail with unicode characters, so I just went through the favorites one by one.

The offending characters for me were superscript TM and copyright symbols some sites have in their window title; also, some sites had put in small directional triangles that had to go. :p
