Q: Why doesn't the "Mass set tags" tool have ID3v2 support?
A: It DOES have ID3v2 support, just like EVERY tool in Mp3/Tag Studio has! There are several reasons for not putting separate ID3v1 and ID3v2 controls on each tool that supports both tag versions (i.e. all the tools):

1. It would clutter up the program interface and make it hard to use.

2. I have designed the program not to easily let people write inconsistent data to the ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags of files (although it is possible if you really want to), since this can lead to very confusing situations when later reading the tags with other programs. You practically always want the two tag versions to contain the same data.

3. The much better solution used in Mp3/Tag Studio is that you can decide exactly which tag-version(s) that the program should write to. You do this from the program main settings (under the file menu). This way you can customize it to write to any combination of tags, e.g. only ID3v1 tags (with optional ID3v1.1), only ID3v2 tags, or both ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags at the same time. These settings will then apply to all tools in the program (except the browse/edit tool, which has its own settings due to speed and usability reasons).

The reason that the mass clean tool still does have separate settings for ID3v1 and ID3v2 fields is that you might want to clean up tags that are already out of sync, or maybe remove only one of the tag versions completely from the files, while keeping the other one fully intact.

Q: Will I be able to totally remove all the advert related files from my computer as soon as I register the program?
A: Yes! Or even better actually, from version 2.18 and above there are never any third party adware files installed whatsoever, not even in the unregistered version! The banner is a completely normal image, just like any other, compiled into the program. No adware, no "spyware", no "calling home", nothing to worry about at all. Actually, if you still refuse to install and test the program just because it has a banner in the unregistered version, there is now a second install package available that has no banners at all! (it has some limitations instead though, in the unregistered mode)

Q: It's not enough for me to be able to remove the advert components after registering the program, I don't even want to install an adware-enabled program on my computer. If I register, can I have a totally adware-free install package?
A: Yes! Not a trace of adware is installed in your computer, not even in the unregistered version. From version 2.18 and above, the banner that is shown in the unregistered version is just a completely normal image, like any other, compiled into the program. No adware, no "spyware", no "calling home", nothing to worry about at all. Actually, if you still refuse to install and test the program just because it has a banner in the unregistered version, there is now a second install package available that has no banners at all! (it has some limitations instead though, in the unregistered mode)

Q: When I rename some of my mp3 files with Mp3/Tag Studio, they get a bunch of spaces after each field inserted into the name. For example like this:

"Britney Spears                 - Stronger                       .mp3"

Is this a bug?
A: No, this is not due to a bug in Mp3/Tag Studio! The files that this happens to have originally been tagged with a program that does not completely follow the ID3v1 standard (e.g. earlier versions of Winamp and even some early versions of Mp3/Tag Studio itself). They have their tag fields padded with spaces instead of null-characters, which in turn causes this.

Simply go into the program main settings and activate "Ignore space-padding in v1 tag fields", and the problem will be gone.

Q: Since version 2.1, tagging some files doesn't always go as lightning fast as it did in earlier versions. Is this a bug, have you written some bad code, or why is this otherwise?
A: This is neither a bug, nor bad programming. It all depends on the fact that full ID3v2 support was added in version 2.1, and the implementation details of ID3v2 tags implies that the whole mp3-file must be rewritten to disk the first time that ID3v2 data is added to it. But as soon as it has got an ID3v2 tag, consequent tagging of it will be as fast as before. But, you can even avoid the extra write time on the first ID3v2 tag write occasion if you use the "Super fast v2 tagging mode", which can be activated from the program main settings! If you aren't interested in writing any ID3v2 info to your files at all but only want to use ID3v1 tags, just like before, simply go into the main program settings and change the primary ID3 version to v1 and disable the "Perform write operations to both tags" option.
If you are more interested in what an ID3v2 tag is and in what ways it differs from a "normal" ID3v1 tag, please take a look at this informational text that I have put together for that purpose.

Q: When I try to install the program I get a notice about some missing files, and the installation is aborted. What is wrong?
A: This problem is completely solved in recent versions. Please download the latest version, and everything will work just fine.

Q: Can you send me an email when the next update of the program is released?
A: Sure! Simply join the mailinglist, and you will be notified of all program updates and interesting program news immediately as they happen.

Q: When I start Mp3/Tag Studio, the main program window flickers and jumps in a really strange way. Why is this, and how can I make it stop?
A: Please start the program with the command-line parameter "-noresize" (edit the properties of the shortcut icon used to start the program), this will make the flickering go away. Also please read about the reason why this is happening to you in the program help file under the section "known problems" (search in the index to get directly to it).

Q: When I start Mp3/Tag Studio, the layout of the program window is really weird (the buttons, textfields and other controls are placed in a strange way). Why is this, and how can I make it look as it should?
A: Please start the program with the command-line parameter "-noresize" (edit the properties of the shortcut icon used to start the program), this should make the layout at least usable. If you want to make it look completely normal, the best tip is to not use non-standard Windows layout settings, and especially not the "Large fonts" setting. Also please read about the reason why this is happening to you in the program help file, under the section "known problems" (search in the index to get directly to it).

Q: Sometimes I get error messages like "A Win32 API function failed" and similar errors on seemingly random locations in the program, like e.g. when starting it or just browsing around in it. What is this?
A: This is due to the fact that the so called "user resources" in your computer are fully used, and it is NOT due to any programming error. These "user resources" in the Windows operating system are NOT connected to the amount of memory you have in your computer, but is a statically allocated memory area in the operating system. Mp3/Tag Studio used to take up relatively much of these "user resources" in past versions, but now it uses a lot less of them, so this should practically not be a problem anymore. I just keep it here in the FAQ just in case. If you would experience similar problems anyway, a very simple solution is to just close down a few other programs, so that not many other programs are running at the same time as Mp3/Tag Studio. Then you will have no such problems at all.

Q: Will you please insert a button that does this certain, special, complicated, specific thing that noone but me will ever use?
A: No, sorry. I try to keep the program interface as simple and uncluttered as possible. Combining the many generic tools of Mp3/Tag Studio you can do millions of different and advanced things. Inserting a button for each of these things would render the program totally unusable, so you just have to live with pressing two or maybe even three buttons to get that special thing done. :-) Suggestions for good general tools and features are always welcome though!

Q: Will you port the program to Linux?
A: No, I don't use Linux myself, and since it really just is my little hobby project I have neither the interest, nor the time to do it. Especially not the time.

Q: I can help you develop the program. Will you send me the source code so I can start working on it?
A: No. This has several reasons. First, Mp3/Tag Studio is just my own little project, and I like to keep it that way. Second, it is of course a very big risk to let out the source code of the program. Anyone could then e.g. put their own name on it and make money on my work, or at least remove the adverts and registration protection from it, i.e. create a cracked version. If your intentions after all were purely honest, thanks for the offer but no thanks.

Q: Your website is sooo plain and ugly, and I'm such a cool webdesigner that could make it really hot and full of moving things and flash animations and java applets and cgi-scripts and java-script errors and an average loading time of 25 minutes and... Can I do this?
A: I believe that websites that have some REAL content on them don't really need all those things. Actually, most of it would only make it harder for people to do what they came for, i.e. download the program, get some info about it and maybe join the mailing list and such. Grow up and get a real job instead. :-)

Q: I have a screen resolution of 28*7 pixels on my computer, and the program does not fully show on screen. You suck, and I will never use your program again.
A: Oh, come on. I have to draw the line somewhere. The program is designed to be fully operational in the minimum resolution of 800*600, which is an absolute minimum for practically every computer these days. In this resolution the program window (including the dir browse tree and custom file selection box) and the advert window can both be fully visible on screen without any overlapping.

Q: My dog ate my computer, and now I don't have the regcode I got when I registered. I know that this is the fifteenth time I ask you this, but I hope you don't mind. Will you send me a new code?
A: Hmm, sure, but PLEASE put your regcode in a safer place this time, e.g. on a paper or on a CDR. Just remember to tell me which of my programs you are talking about, and be sure to include the full name you registered it to in the request. Also be sure to send it from the email address you used when you registered the program.

Q: Hi it's me again (from the last question). My dog is having these strange contractions and seems to be a bit constipated, do you have any idea what could be the matter with him?
A: Oh come on, you can drop the act now. I know very well that you lost that regcode all by yourself due to nothing else than pure carelessness. Just don't do it again, ok? :-)

Q: Hi, my name is Bambi. For the last two years I have lived at the playboy mansion, but recently I was forced to quit due to the overwhelming jealousy from all the other girls. Now I have this big problem controlling my nymphomanic urges, will you please help me?
A: Well, my schedule is pretty full, but as the good samaritan I am, I will try to make time for it anyway. I have put together a treatment plan for us to follow, which I have attached to this mail.

Q: Hi, it's Bambi again. I really don't see how that treatment plan you sent me could actually help reducing my problems, but I just have to trust you I guess?
A: That's the spirit! My urg... *coff* I mean YOUR PROBLEMS will be gone in no time. Just don't forget to wear the lingerie specified in the treatment plan for our first treatment session on saturday, ok? :-)

A: The best mp3 and tagging tool collection that you will probably ever find.
Q: *ping* What is Mp3/Tag Studio? :-)

A: About 4 questions ago.
Q: *ping* When did this FAQ start to get out of hand, and would have done best in just ending? :-)

A: Four-hundred pounds of roasted elephant balls.
Q: Wait a minute, aren't you supposed to ask the questions while I supply the answers?
R: Sorry, you have to formulate your answer as a question, and the correct answer should have been...
X: Oh shut up, let's just end this already, ok? :-)
